Dear Charleston,
Hey Charleston, come On Down.
We’ve been making the drive for years.
Up 17, windows down, talking about dinner before we even hit the bridge. You know the routine. Someone throws out FIG, Vern’s, or Chubby Fish, and before long you’re three stops deep into a night that Charleston seems to have perfected. Polished, dialed in, just a little ahead.
We’ve always had a little bit of jealousy, if we’re being honest. We hear about your restaurants, your concert scene, all those “number one city in the country” rankings that seem to land in your lap every year. It’s hard not to notice. Hard not to feel it just a little.

People like to say you’re ten years ahead of us. But, somewhere along the way, something started happening down here.
Maybe it started quietly. A weekend trip. A wedding invite. A friend saying, “Hey, come down to Savannah, it’s changing” You didn’t believe it at first. Why would you? You had your spots. Your rhythm. Your version of how a city is supposed to feel.
But then you came anyway. You checked into a hotel. Maybe Hotel Bardo or Municipal Grand, maybe just for a night. You walked outside thinking you knew what Savannah was going to give you. And then it didn’t.
Dinner at Lucia Pasta Bar, Brochu’s, or Common Thread. A cocktail at Savoy Society. Maybe even Late Air, or Joe and Vera’s. Perhaps a nightcap at Lone Wolf or Bar Julian. Or someone dragged you to Victory North and you caught a band you didn’t expect to care about. Or maybe you did it right at Enmarket Arena and saw Billy Strings rip through a set and suddenly the whole night tilted.
And somewhere between drinks and music and that slow walk back through the city, you felt it. Not louder. Not bigger. Just…different.
Savannah isn’t trying to outdo you. That’s the thing people miss. We’re not chasing Charleston. We never have been. This place moves at its own pace. It always has. But lately, that pace has picked up just enough to make you look twice.
And then it hits you, this isn’t the Savannah you thought you knew.
By the way, we still love coming up your way. That part hasn’t changed. We’ll keep making that drive, keep sitting at your bars, keep ordering one more round when we said we wouldn’t. There’s a reason Charleston is Charleston.
But here’s the thing. It’s a short drive back. And down here, something is building. Not all at once. Not in some big announcement. Just piece by piece. Room by room. Night by night.
You don’t need a guide when you get here. Just tell someone you’re from Charleston. We’ll point you in the right direction.
We’re the Hostess City, after all. And lately, we’ve gotten pretty good at it.
Sincerely,
Brett Bigelow
