The Cats Are in Charge
Kyle Kinane had been home in Portland for less than a day when we talked. He had three days to catch up with his cats, water the plants and enjoy the fall colors before heading back out. The plants, he reported, were still alive. One of the cats was staring at him. “I don’t try and comment on their lives,” he said. It’s a pretty good start to a conversation with a comedian who knows how to find a joke in the ordinary details.

Kinane is making a quick swing through the Southeast, with stops in Atlanta, Savannah and Chattanooga. He remembers playing the Wormhole years ago. This time, he’ll be at Victory North, where he has two shows on Friday night. The career has moved him into bigger rooms, including Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse, but he talks about that progress without turning it into a victory lap. “It’s just nice to know that you’re moving forward in your career.”
He also has a healthy suspicion of the idea that a comedian must turn every moment into content. Kinane knows the hustle is real, and he knows social media can help sell tickets. But he’d rather not spend every night filming, editing and posting. “I’m a stand-up,” he said. “I wanted to tell the jokes, hang out, have some laughs, and then take it easy while it goes well.”
That’s not a complaint about the people who do it differently. Kinane’s just clear about the deal he wants to make with his work. He likes performing, he likes getting to travel, and he likes having a life when the show is over. When he goes out for the night and realizes he hasn’t checked his phone, he considers that a success. “I was in the moment.”
His material makes room for the news and politics, but he says the show is mostly personal, including the challenge of processing a world that can feel relentlessly loud. He isn’t looking to stand onstage and repeat the headlines. “It should be funnier than it is making a point,” he said. That leaves room for sharp observations, everyday absurdities and the kind of laugh that comes from recognizing yourself in the story.
Kinane may be touring by air, but he’s not treating his life like an airport lounge between career moves. He wants the jokes to land, the audience to have a good time, and the cats to keep him informed when he gets home. Savannah gets two chances to join in.
Kyle Kinane performs Friday, October 16, at Victory North, 2603 Whitaker St. The early show is at 7 p.m.; the late show is at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are available through Victory North.
