Baby’s General Store Opens

March 30, 2025

Nestled in a historic 1928 gas station, Baby’s General Store has opened its doors in Baldwin Park, blending nostalgia with community spirit. General Manager Katherine Dagen describes the store as “your old school classic corner store,” but with a modern twist. “We’re not just somewhere to grab and go; we’re a community hangout,” she says, emphasizing the store’s role in fostering local connections through collaborations with makers and vintage sellers.

The building itself is steeped in history, which inspired its transformation. “It was originally a Gulf filling station, then a supply stop for trains, and later a convenience store in the 1950s,” Dagen explains. After decades of dormancy, Baby’s General Store revives this neighborhood gem with its unique offerings and events like the upcoming Makers Market on April 26.

The menu reflects its nostalgic roots. “Our coffee slushie has been an instant hit, selling out by mid-morning,” Dagen shares. Other favorites include the “Big Dog Meal”—two hot dogs served on an old-school lunch tray—and vanilla soft serve, perfect for making classic Coke floats. “It’s the kind of place you’d ride your bike to as a kid,” she adds.

As for the name? Dagen reveals it originated from an early concept for a barbecue spot. “The name stuck even as the vision evolved. At this point, this store is all of our ‘baby,’ and we’re here to help it grow.”

Baby’s General Store is more than just snacks and soft serve; it’s a celebration of community. “We’re here for our neighborhood,” says Dagen, inviting locals to share ideas via social media or by stopping by to add suggestions to their “What Would You Like to See at Baby’s” list. With its blend of history, nostalgia, and community focus, Baby’s General Store is quickly becoming a cornerstone of the Savannah Community.
