He was simply describing what he\u2019d noticed after moving here from Chicago. But the more you think about it, the more  it feels like one of the most accurate  descriptions of the city I\u2019ve ever heard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">In most places, work tends to define people. Careers become identities. Conversations eventually drift toward promotions,  titles, industries, and accomplishments. Savannah has always felt a little different. The surgeon is hanging out with the artist. The entrepreneur is having cocktails with the musician. The photographer is talking travel with the architect. The lines blur. People become known less for what they  do and more for who they are.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Bud Green fits into that world  almost perfectly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Spend an hour with him and you\u2019ll hear about photography, vinyl records, French wine, train travel, architecture, cocktails, food, music festivals, black\u2013and\u2013white film, and the subtle differences between Savannah and southern France. Somewhere in there you\u2019ll also discover he built a software  company that grew from a one\u2013person  operation into an international business with offices in Chicago, London, and Manila.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">When Bud Green talks about his life, it sounds less like a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 and more like somebody emptying their pockets onto  a table.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">A photography exhibition in France.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">A guest bartending shift at Hawthorn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">A stack of vinyl records waiting for his next DJ set.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">A software company that grew from a one\u2013person operation into a global business.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Plans to learn French. Maybe piano. Maybe something else.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The funny thing is, none of it feels random. Spend an hour with Green and you realize he\u2019s built a life around following whatever happens to capture his curiosity next.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The funny thing is, that part almost  feels secondary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">When Green was working at a Chicago advertising agency in 1990, he noticed a better way to do something. So he built software to solve the problem himself.  What started as a side project eventually became a global company. Years later, after selling the business, he and his wife Lynn found themselves looking for a new home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">\u201cWe were looking for someplace warmer, historic, walkable, not landlocked,\u201d  Green says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">That search eventually narrowed to two cities: Charleston and Savannah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The couple spent time in both places doing something surprisingly simple. They sat at restaurant bars and talked to locals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">\u201cWe wanted to get an idea of what it was like,\u201d Green says. \u201cAnd really it was very clear that we preferred Savannah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The difference wasn\u2019t architecture or  weather. It was people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Even now, years later, Green still talks about Savannah as if he discovered a secret hiding in plain sight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Someone once described the city to him  this way:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/savannahmadesimple.com\/Magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/The-Talented-Mr-Green_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:100%\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align:left; text-transform:uppercase;\">\u201cSavannah is like being in college, only more money and no exams.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">He laughs when he repeats it, but he also understands exactly what it means.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">There is a social energy here that is  difficult to explain to outsiders. Friendships form quickly. Dinner turns into drinks. Drinks turn into invitations. People seem genuinely interested in one another. The city has a way of pulling people into orbit around shared interests, whether that\u2019s music, food, art, photography, or simply sitting at a bar having a conversation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Green experienced that almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The day he closed on his house, he and  Lynn were sitting outside with a newly  purchased patio table when a stranger stopped by to introduce herself. That  stranger was Susan Mason.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Through Susan they met other people. Those people introduced them to more people. Before long they had a network of friends that continued to expand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">\u201cI have more friends in Savannah than I had after three decades in Chicago,\u201d Green says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The friendships led to opportunities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Some people discover golf. Others discover pickleball. Bud Green somehow became  a DJ.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The story started at a birthday party at Savoy Society. Green rented out the space for Lynn\u2019s birthday and decided to bring a stack of records to play during the evening. Guests enjoyed it. The bartenders enjoyed it. Before long, people were encouraging him to do it again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Today he regularly spins vinyl around town.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The same curiosity led him behind a bar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">One day, while hanging out at Hawthorn Mini Bar, Green casually mentioned that he\u2019d love to help out sometime. The owners took him seriously. He arrived expecting to observe and perhaps lend a hand. Instead, they handed him a station and put him to work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">\u201cThey just stuck me behind the bar,\u201d  he says, laughing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Most people would view that as stressful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Green viewed it as fun.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">In fact, that may be the common thread connecting nearly everything he does.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">\u201cI like to do things I don\u2019t really know how to do very well,\u201d he says. \u201cIt puts me in an uncomfortable feeling. That\u2019s when you\u2019re learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">That mindset explains photography.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">It explains bartending.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">It explains DJing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">It even explains France.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad_width1\">\n<div class=\"fl-lt ad_width2\">\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Green and Lynn recently spent two months living in Avignon, a historic city in southern France. Listening to him describe it feels strangely familiar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">\u201cIt\u2019s also a very tourist city,\u201d he says. \u201cVery slow paced. Very walkable. Very relaxed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The similarities between Avignon and Savannah surprised him. Both cities revolve around pedestrians rather than cars. Both celebrate food and drink. Both attract visitors while somehow maintaining a strong local identity. Both encourage lingering.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">In France, dinners stretch for hours. Nobody rushes you out. Nobody drops the check without being asked. The table is yours for the evening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">That slower rhythm resonates with Green.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-rt ad_width2\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/savannahmadesimple.com\/Magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/The-Talented-Mr-Green_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:100%\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">And while he loves France, he also  recognizes what makes Savannah special.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">In Chicago, he says, people are often focused on getting ahead. Careers dominate life. Ambition drives the culture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Savannah is different.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Here, social life isn\u2019t squeezed into  whatever time remains after work. It is  part of life itself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">That distinction matters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">It\u2019s why a software entrepreneur can become a photographer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Why a photographer can become a DJ.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Why a DJ can become a guest bartender.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Why somebody can spend the afternoon discussing French trains, then spend the evening helping promote a music festival.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The city encourages that sort of exploration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">And Green seems determined to take full advantage of it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">When asked what\u2019s next, he talks about improving his French. He talks about becoming better behind the turntables. He talks about learning piano.
