The game’s not scripted. There’s no predetermined winner.”

That is the part people sometimes miss. Yes, there is dancing. Yes, there are theatrics. Yes, there is a robot umpire who might make a check swing call in full mechanical fashion. But the balls and strikes are real. The tension is real. The stakes, for the players at least, are still very real.

And so are the mistakes.

“Unfortunately, I’m human,” Chapman says. “I have less than one second to decide if it’s a ball or strike.”

He does not hide from that reality. In a world increasingly obsessed with precision and replay and eliminating error altogether, Chapman defends the human element.

“What’s great about baseball is it is human error,” he says. “It’s a game of inches. If you take that human element out of it, man, it’s just gonna be so cut and dry.”

Even in Banana Ball, where an “umpire ninja” might flip into a call at first base and a robot character is waiting in the wings, the heartbeat is still human.

Chapman’s journey into this surreal version of baseball feels almost fated. Years ago, a viral video of him dancing behind the plate caught fire online. The Bananas saw it. A message was sent. A path shifted.

“Who would ever want a dancing umpire, right?” he says, laughing at the absurdity of it. Then he adds, “Apparently, America does.”

That viral moment became something bigger than novelty. It became identity. It became brand. It became opportunity. Today, he signs autographs. He takes pictures. He has merchandise. Bobbleheads.

“Jesse told me I’d be signing autographs after every game and be the most loved umpire in the world,” Chapman says. “Everything he’s ever told us, it’s happened.”

He is talking about Jesse Cole, the visionary behind the Bananas. In stadiums that feel more like concerts. In crowds that do not sit quietly scrolling their phones but stand, scream, sing, and sway. In nights where 80,000 fans fill a football stadium for what used to be a sleepy summer sport.

“It’s insane,” Chapman says of walking into a major league stadium with Banana Ball energy. “It’s like a concert you’ve always wanted to go to. Everybody’s happy. Everybody’s on their feet.”

He does not get nervous. He gets anxious. “I know I have a job to do and I’m gonna entertain. I love to entertain. Make people happy.”

That duality defines him. The disciplinarian and the showman. The rule enforcer and the dancer. The man who once got into heated run ins with players like Eric Jones, even suspended after things got physical years ago, but who will tell you in the same breath, “I love the guy. He’s a great human being off the field.”

Competition is real. Emotion is real.
