Spanta described experiencing a range of emotions, from paralyzing fear to unwavering determination. One chilling moment involved a text message from a friend working with rescue teams on the ground in Afghanistan, confirming their worst fears: crossing the border was not only difficult but potentially deadly. \u201cOne wrong move, one mistaken identity, and it would all be over,\u201d Spanta remembered. These moments of raw vulnerability, captured on film, underscore the very real dangers faced by those trying to escape the Taliban\u2019s grip.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">\u201cOne Step Away\u201d also highlights the importance of storytelling. Spanta never intended to make a documentary, but as the rescue mission unfolded, she realized the power of sharing her family\u2019s story. \u201cEvery call, every email, every failed attempt felt like a race against time,\u201d she explained. \u201cBut in the midst of it all, we realized this story, the fear, the impossible choices, the unbreakable ties of family and heritage that needed to be told.\u201d The film became a way for Spanta to process her own trauma and to amplify the voices of Afghan women who are often silenced.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad_width1\">\n<div class=\"fl-lt ad_width2\">\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Spanta, along with her siblings scattered across the globe, worked tirelessly, using WhatsApp as their lifeline. \u201cWhatsApp was our lifeline but also a risk. The Taliban monitored messages, and families caught speaking with outsiders, especially U.S. citizens, faced brutal consequences,\u201d Spanta recounted. This constant threat underscored the precariousness of their situation and the bravery of their actions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">When all other avenues were exhausted, Spanta turned to SCAD\u2019s President Paula Wallace for help. This decision proved pivotal. \u201cSCAD had always been a place of support and opportunity for me,\u201d Spanta explained. \u201cAnd President Wallace wasn\u2019t just a distant figure; she was the queen bee of SCAD, deeply invested in her hive, ensuring her students, her bees, had the support to thrive and make an impact in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-rt ad_width2\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/savannahmadesimple.com\/Magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Afghan-Sisters.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center; font-size:12px; margin:0\">Photos provided by SCADWhatsApp<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Wallace\u2019s response was immediate and compassionate, setting in motion a chain of events that would ultimately change the lives of Spanta\u2019s sisters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">SCAD\u2019s involvement went beyond simply offering support; they became active partners in the rescue mission. \u201cI was at Mood Fabrics in NYC, swatching fabrics with a client when my phone rang. On the other end were three of SCAD\u2019s top leaders,\u201d Spanta recalled. This marked the beginning of a two year ordeal involving intricate logistical planning, financial aid, and constant communication. SCAD leaders, including Vice President Hannah Flowers and Peter May, played crucial roles, working tirelessly alongside Spanta.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The impact of \u201cOne Step Away\u201d has been significant. It has garnered numerous awards and accolades, raising awareness about the plight of women in Afghanistan. \u201cAfghanistan remains the only country where, as Meryl Streep put it, \u2018a squirrel has more freedom than a woman,&#8217;\u201d Spanta pointed out. The documentary serves as a powerful reminder of the human rights violations occurring in Afghanistan and the urgent need for change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Saki and Soda were both studying architecture at a university in Afghanistan, when the Taliban regained control, they could no longer go to class. But now, they are finishing their architecture degrees at SCAD, which even offered full ride scholarships and student visas for both sisters, providing them with not just an education but a future. \u201cThis wasn\u2019t just an education. It was their freedom. A once in a lifetime opportunity. The golden ticket,\u201d Spanta said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Beyond its political impact, \u201cOne Step Away\u201d is a testament to the transformative power of education. Spanta\u2019s sisters are now thriving at SCAD, experiencing freedoms they never thought possible. \u201cThis is what freedom looks like,\u201d Spanta declared. \u201cOne Step Away is not just a story of survival, it\u2019s a story of possibility.
